My two cents:
From where I stand this event is a practical way to promote the minutia of the New Eden Lore and role-play Faction Warfare (rpFW). With rpFW I mean the real deal... like in EVE, not some simple progression towards Planetary Conquest. The only difference here is that we are not forced into a Militia corporation.
At the moment of creating our characters, the brief summary of each race is clear enough to give us a context that we will (or are suposed to) relate to. If you didn't really care to read... well then, probably role-playing FW isn-Št really for you and it should just become that simple progression between Public matches and Planetary Conquest .
However it should not be a locked issue and I really understand those that request a race change. In this case I would strongly defend an alternative "loyalty declaration" solution if ever it becomes possible: your standings define your loyalty automatically!
We can only dream with the day we may commission an EVE player to take our merc anywhere in New Eden!!!
I assume that faction gear demand must be very much lopsided towards Gallente and Minmatar because those items are the main reason most of us do FW. If this is the case then buffing (slightly...) underused faction gear should help mercs look into those factions and balance standings out.
CCP: Would it be possible for us to know how balanced the factions have been?
The event can then be a chance for us mercs to look, once again, at our own (and others) inherited faction strengths and see if we can relate to the resulting play styles. In other words, our everyday life in DUST!
Though it is true that many FW caldari adversaries are lacking in team/squad work, I have been on the receiving end of "monumental stomps" beautifully executed by extremely competent teams aided by many EVE pilots. So the resources and manpower is there!!! More interesting is the fact that EVE also sees some real issues in the Caldari Militia... [yes I know this sounds like trolling the Caldari...].
Sorry about the wall of text...
Summed up: Faction Warfare should have embedded role-play mechanisms: 0.1-Declaration of loyalty defined by mercs standings. 0.2-Fight for your "declared" faction and you get ISK. 0.3-Fight in "correct" faction gear only and get extra bonus LP.
PS: I still await the day when we see a Jove warrior merc...
